DJ Equipment - Wireless Microphones
Wireless microphone systems are extremely popular with DJ and MC performers as there is total freedom to move around without trailing a cable to trip over. With a variety of hand held mic capsule options in most wireless systems, performers can get a professional sound that caters to the type of voice that will use it. Having their own wireless mic system can be a comfort factor for the artist because they know they can expect consistent operation and sound of the system, night after night.
Wireless mic systems can also include body pack/headset mics for the DJ who wants both hands free to mix while they talk. Some wireless receiver models include high and low equalization to further tweak the tone of the voice using the system. The mic (transmitter) runs on batteries, while the receiver has a power cord for AC operation. Diversity systems have 2 antennas that will switch back and forth quietly to the strongest receiving antenna for minimal dropouts of the signal. Some systems are dual channel so there are two systems in one box.
Many wireless mic systems are frequency agile; meaning their RF channels can be changed to suit the geographic area where they will be used, or if there is another wireless system in the area on the same frequency.
Most all professional wireless mic systems are in the UHF bands, although there are still some VHF units available. There are restrictions on the frequencies to be used and any older wireless units probably won’t be in compliance. Ranges for wireless systems average about 250 feet.
